Persistence pays off for SRUC Rural Business Management graduate Louise Finnie

Louise Finnie joined our Land Management team as an Assistant Land Agent this Summer. Based in Perth, she is involved in rural estate and farm management while working towards her APC and CAAV exams.

Louise comes from an agricultural background and briefly trained as a veterinary nurse before switching to Rural Business Management at SRUC in Aberdeen where she graduated with honours.

She says: “Growing up in Cupar, my parents ran a diverse business which included a small farm, car sales garage and a residential and commercial letting portfolio. Surrounded by farm, property and car chat (the latter, I hasten to add, didn’t interest me in the least!), the seeds were sewn very early on to follow a career in the rural sector.

“As I grew older I was allowed to help out on the farm and my love of animals came in the form of ponies. Outwith school, Pony Club followed by Young Farmers filled most of my spare time until I headed off to study veterinary nursing, before realising very quickly that it wasn’t for me. After changing my course to Rural Business Management, I knew I was absolutely on the correct path.”

Unfortunately, the Covid pandemic meant that Louise couldn’t take up her planned work experience placement with Bell Ingram.

She continues: “However, I kept in contact and when I completed my BA (Hons) Rural Business Management, I enquired about the possibility of carrying out a full summer placement. My persistence must have paid off because I was offered the position of Assistant Land Agent in the Perth office which I started in July.”

Louise is enjoying the challenges of her new role: “No two days are the same and the mix of office-based and on-site work keeps things very interesting. This practical professional experience, coupled with Bell Ingram’s excellent programme of support, will enable me to reach my full potential as I work towards my APC, becoming a member of RICS and CAAV.

“I especially enjoy being part of and working alongside a great team of people and look forward to helping create trusting, long lasting relationships with our clients.”
